@Dave: Finally, someone who actually gets what I am say'n here! Appreciate the book reference too. The whole mindset of lets watch people fail by requiring them to spend money on our products regardless if they can move them is ridiculous. People have such hope in companies, especially when the economy sucks. They think they can make a million dollars on the internet (haha) additionally they can make ends meet by selling makeup to their friends. Just because one person made it work, doesn't mean everyone will. Silly silly.

I just read an interesting book called "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion". These types of companies use a known psychological approach to sell their products. You see your friends or family purchasing these items and peer pressure works on you to make you also buy some. This works partially because your friends give their 'approval' of the product, but also because you feel bad saying no. This feeds into the buying "frenzy" when you see your other peers buying products. The part that really gets me is how they manipulate your social groups into making the company a large profit while giving false hope to many sellers that they can be successful, when the chances are that they will spend more than they will make in the endeavor. Mary Kay, Avon and Pampered Chef, as well as Partylite - which I have never heard of before - should be ashamed of these tactics.

Paul Carr calls this the Mashable Rule:

Remember, a good title serves two important functions: 1) to attract comment trolls, and 2) to amuse Gabe Rivera from Techmeme. One tried and tested format is the “Why X will be the Y killer” construction, or the even more popular “Five tips for…” meme. The latter is especially recommended for authors who are working against a tight deadline: readers will tolerate any shit as long as it’s in a numbered list (the so-called ‘Mashable Rule’).
